Don't Suffer Alone with Anxiety or Depression: Help is Near.

What is Medication Management?

For many mental health conditions, clinicians frequently recommend the use of psychotropic medications—those that influence a person’s mental state, such as antidepressants—as a treatment option and a complement to talk therapy. A session with our clinicians can be a starting point for discussing potential benefits or concerns related to taking medication. Medication Management is only provided by our board-certified Medical Doctors (Psychiatrists) or Nurse Practitioners (NPs). They can determine if medication is right for you and provide ongoing support.

Medication Management or Psychotherapy (Talk Therapy)

Which One is Right For Me?

Our clinicians will evaluate your mental health history, symptoms, previous medications, impairment levels, diagnosis, and overall well-being to determine if a Talk Therapy or Medication Management appointment would be a better fit for your needs. In some cases, Medication Management may be recommended later to address moderate to severe symptoms that haven’t responded adequately to Talk Therapy alone. Our goal is to help you regain your ability to function and enjoy life.

Prescription Medication

Psychiatric medications are prescribed to address a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others. Their effectiveness and potential side effects can vary greatly depending on the individual and the medication used.

If medication is prescribed for you:

  • Your provider will explain: The reasons for choosing a specific medication and any potential side effects.

  • Time is key: Most medications take time to work effectively. It's important to follow the prescribed dosage and give the medication a chance, often 3-4 weeks.

A common misconception: It's important to understand that seeking help for mental health issues is a sign of strength, not weakness. Our clients demonstrate courage and dedication in their journey toward healing.

How psychiatric medications work:

  • Neurotransmitter balance: Medications often work by adjusting the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain to improve symptoms.

  • Time to see results: Some medications work quickly, while others may take weeks or months. Consistent use is crucial even if you do not see immediate improvement.

Important considerations:

  • Dosage adjustments: Due to potential risks and side effects, medication dosages may need to be adjusted.

  • Medication interactions: Always inform your provider about all medications you're taking, including over-the-counter options.

  • Common side effects of psychiatric medications: These can include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, appetite changes, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction. However, not everyone experiences side effects, and the severity and duration of side effects can vary.

Questions and concerns:

  • Contact us: If you have questions about the instructions for your medication or are concerned about side effects, call us and select the Medication Refills option.

  • Beyond medication:

  • Holistic approach: Remember that psychiatric medications are one part of treatment. Therapy, lifestyle changes, and support from loved ones play vital roles in overall mental health.

By working closely with your healthcare provider, you can effectively manage your mental health condition and improve your quality of life.
