Could TMS Be Right For You?

TMS is a safe and effective treatment for depression. It is particularly recommended for patients who did not respond to medication or other forms of treatment.

What to Expect at Your Consultation

A thorough assessment of your symptoms, treatment history, and other health factors is needed to determine if you qualify for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Therapy. Once TMS therapy is prescribed, an initial appointment will be scheduled for a 1-2 hour session.

TMS is non-invasive and non-systemic. Patients are awake during the treatment and can resume normal activities the rest of the day.

About TMS Treatment

If your provider determines that TMS is a good and safe option for you, they’ll discuss the treatment schedule. TMS involves multiple treatments—typically three to five per week—spread out over several weeks. For FDA-approved protocols for depression, a typical TMS course involves every weekday over six weeks with a 3-week taper period for a total of 36 treatments.

TMS can also be used by patients looking to lower their antidepressant medication dose or for anyone hoping to cease taking medication entirely. This would be done under the supervision of a medical doctor. Therefore, transcranial magnetic stimulation can be an excellent way to support this transition process.

TMS treatment is ideal for most patients with treatment-resistant depression. TMS is not recommended for individuals who are pregnant, have a history of seizures, or have any metal objects in their heads. Patients with pacemakers should first consult their cardiologist.
